چکیده

The neutrino experiment MicroBooNE is currently under construction. To expedite the physics output of MicroBooNE, a smaller version of its optical detection system has been implemented. To demonstrate full operability of this prototype, two physics measurements were performed. The first examines the number of scintillation light components, for although theory explains two components, other groups have seen evidence for a third. The second measures late light quenching as a function of nitrogen gas impurity concentration in the liquid argon. We find marginal evidence for a third component and further steps are identified to improve upon this study. Our late light quenching measurement also agrees with previously published results in the literature. These two measurements are useful not only from a detector development standpoint, but also for detector simulations. Thesis Supervisor: Janet M. Effects of Nitrogen contamination in liquid Argon

A dedicated test of the effects of Nitrogen contamination in liquid Argon has been performed at the INFN-Gran Sasso Laboratory (LNGS, Italy) within the WArP R&D program. A detector has been designed and assembled for this specific task and connected to a system for the injection of controlled amounts of gaseous Nitrogen into the liquid Argon. Purpose of the test is to detect the reduction of th...

Testing of Cryogenic Photomultiplier Tubes for the MicroBooNE Experiment

The MicroBooNE detector, to be located on axis in the Booster Neutrino Beamline (BNB) at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab), consists of two main components: a large liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC), and a light collection system. Thirty 8inch diameter Hamamatsu R5912-02mod cryogenic photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) will detect the scintillation light generated in the...

A measurement of the absorption of liquid argon scintillation light by dissolved nitrogen at the part-per- million level

We report on a measurement of the absorption length of scintillation light in liquid argon due to dissolved nitrogen at the part-per-million (ppm) level. We inject controlled quantities of nitrogen into a high purity volume of liquid argon and monitor the light yield from an alpha source. The source is placed at different distances from a cryogenic photomultiplier tube assembly. By comparing th...

Luminescence quenching of the triplet excimer state by air traces in gaseous argon

While developing a liquid argon detector for dark matter searches we investigate the influence of air contamination on the VUV scintillation yield in gaseous argon at atmospheric pressure. We determine with a radioactive αsource the photon yield for various partial air pressures and different reflectors and wavelength shifters. We find for the fast scintillation component a time constant τ1 = 1...

The Muon Counter System for the MicroBooNE experiment

The MicroBooNE experiment is a liquid argon TPC experiment designed for short-baseline neutrino physics, currently running at Fermilab. Due to its location near the surface, cosmic muons can be a source of backgrounds to many analyses and having a good understanding of the cosmic rays will be very valuable for the experiment. These proceedings describe the physics motivation, setup, and perform...
